How to Choose the Right Neighbourhood

The right home in the wrong location can be a costly mistake. Here's how to find both.

Estate agents have long said that property is all about location. That's because the building itself can be renovated, extended, or redecorated. The street it sits on cannot be changed. Getting the location right from the start is the most important decision you'll make.

What to look for

Consider your daily life: the commute to work, proximity to schools if you have children, local shops and restaurants. Look at transport links and think about where those links might improve — upcoming infrastructure investment often signals future price growth.

Visit more than once

A neighbourhood at 10am on a Tuesday looks very different from the same street on a Friday evening or a Sunday morning. Visit at multiple times before committing. Talk to people who live there. No amount of online research replaces time spent on the ground.
